Jacobus Alfons, or Bobby to his family and friends, loved Dutch Jenever but missed the taste of home. In 1950, Bobby started infusing his Jenever with familiar Indonesian spices and herbs, unknowingly creating his own gin and laying the foundation for Bobby’s Schiedam Dry Gin. Years later, Bobby’s grandson, Sebastiaan discovered an old Jenever bottle at his mother’s house. Inspired by the story of his grandfather, and the unique Indonesian recipe, he went to Schiedam - the city where gin was born. There he met with the seventh-generation master distiller of Herman Jansen Distillery and together they started working on creating a unique gin, blending the tradition of Schiedam Jenever with the best East Asian botanicals and spices. They replicated the same bottle shape that Sebastiaan discovered at this mother’s house, adding the traditional Indonesian IKAT design; bringing the old and the new together.

Pinang Raci literally translates as a mishmash of spices. Pinang Raci Spice Blend No.1 celebrates the flavours of Grandfather Bobby’s birthplace Naku on ‘spice island’ Ambon. The diversity of Indonesian spices made for a journey of discovery through the most surprising flavour combinations. After experimenting with over 70 samples, the ultimate Bobby’s Pinang Raci Spice Blend No.1 was found. An aromatic gin full of vibrant, warming notes of Daun Salam, Turmeric and Galangal – supported by Ginger, Sweet Orange, Cloves, Cinnamon, Lemongrass, Cubeb Pepper, Coriander and Juniper. A modern take on Grandfather Bobby’s unique spice blend Pinang Raci.

Tasting Notes:

NOSE: Full of spice: ginger, citrus, and juniper all come through, blending perfectly in the nose.
TASTE: On the palate there is a cooling sensation, which comes from the daun salam and lemongrass. As the gin warms in the mouth more flavours develop. Sweet orange and coriander, join with juniper. Floral notes blend with the ginger and galangal as a backing flavour. It has an oily mouth feel, which coats the mouth perfectly imparting all these delicious flavours.
FINISH: As it develops more, with spices coming through further, before a long, luxurious finish – bringing all the flavours together before a final taste of Bobby’s signature cubeb pepper.
